Producers Steven Spielberg and
Kathleen Kennedy cast Margaret Avery after Tina Turner
turned it down. Margaret Avery ended up with a nomination
for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar. The film stared
Danny Glover as Albert, Whoopi Goldberg as Celie, Oprah
Winfrey as Sofia, as well as Margaret Avery as Shug Avery.
One source claims the film was nominated for 11 Oscars
